water Therapy

Osteoarthritis is a common condition in the UK and affects more than 8 million people.  It is a condition that affects your joints, causing pain and stiffness.  Symptoms of osteoarthritis can include knee pain, stiffness, a grating or grinding sensation and soft or hard swellings.

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that normally cushions the joint becomes thinner and rougher, causing the bones beneath to thicken and eventually rub against each other.

What causes it?

There are a number of factors which increase your risk including a mixture of the following:

  • Gender – Women are more likely to suffer with osteoarthritis
  • Age – Being over 40
  • Obesity – Being overweight puts significant pressure on your knee joints
  • Injury – Any injury or operation on the knee joint may lead to osteoarthritis

Normal general activity and exercise don’t cause osteoarthritis.  But harder repetitive activity or physically demanding jobs can increase your risk.

Hydrotherapy for Osteoarthritis

So does water hydrotherapy help osteoarthritis? Yes is one simple answer. Hydrotherapy or water therapy can help people with osteoarthritis as the buoyancy of the water reduces the force of gravity so reducing the weigh placed on joints.

If you have osteoarthritis then you have probably been told that exercise is the best non-drug treatment for improving pain associated with osteoarthritis.   Strengthening exercises have been shown to reduce pain. Aerobic exercise reduces pain due to the pain-relieving hormone endorphin which exercise generates. Also you will get a better night’s sleep and generally feel better from aerobic excercise.

Find the Balance

Obviously you’ll need to find the right balance between rest and exercise.  It is recommended little and often is a good approach.  You don’t want to do too much activity as this could increase the pain, but on the other end of the scale too little and you will feel joints stiffen up.
